RIP Steve Irwin
Earlier today as I'm sure all have heard by now, Steve Irwin aka the Crocodile Hunter was killed by a stingray. He was filming a new special for Animal Planet, and was actually just filming a bit about the coral reef, when the stingray hidden underneath the sand stabbed him through the heart with its poisonous barb. According to Wikipedia, this was only the third known fatality in Australian history from a stingray attack, and the first since 1945. As of 1996, only seventeen worldwide fatalities have been recorded.
He may of come across as an idiot to some, but his passion for animals was always evident and he has probably been seen by millions across the globe, as well as teaching millions about animals. Tragically he leaves behind his wife and 2 young children.
YTMND is full of tributes today, some more tasteful than others. However, being a giant nerd and all, this one struck home for me the most. I'm not a religious man, but I like to think that his spirit does live on in all of us and we can bring the enthusiasm he showed on a daily basis into our own lives.
