College Football Thoughts: Week 3
Known as "separation Saturday". Some thoughts from the days games.
1. Ohio State vs. Cincinnati. While off to a slow start had a pretty dominating game over Cincinnati. Antonio Pittman is a very good runner, they should go to the run game more. I felt Ginn actually had a turd sandwich of a game, but the stats will tell a different story. Smith, very reliable. Glad to see the 2nd team in there getting some work, Small looks like he will be a good receiver, and the TE got involved today too.
2. Notre Dame vs. Michigan. Well, guess the party is over in South Bend. One of two things, either Michigan is back or ND was very over rated. Maybe a bit of both. Brady Quinn got absolutely hammered today. And Mike Hart of Michigan had a monster day. Circle that 3rd weekend in November, I have a feeling there will be a battle in Columbus that day. ND got pwned today, plain and simple.
3. LSU vs. Aubrun. LSU blows the last second chance to come away with a win at Auburn. A really classic battle here of 2 defensive powers. 4 yards away from winning this one were the Tigers. The SEC is so tough this year, best conference in the nation by far. Very exciting game, very hard hitting. On a side note, the CBS announcers are far superior to the ABC and NBC ones. They really called the game well and that stadium was rocking. You could feel the energy.
4. OK vs. Oregon. The end to the OK - Oregon game was insane. Oregon scores a TD to go up by 1 with 30 seconds left. OK gets a big run back right off the kick off to get within field goal range. Then, inexplicably, with no time outs, OK runs Peterson! What are they thinking?! No time outs, less than 20 seconds, you take one shot to get closer, then kick the field goal. I don't care if you have Jim Brown and Barry Sanders in the back field, you don't run the ball with no time outs in that situation! They managed to spike the ball with 2 seconds left, then Oregon blocks the field goal! Great ending here, very exciting, but some rather questionable officiating towards the end.
5. Miami vs. Louisville. Louisville gets maybe the biggest win in their programs history. Miami is in big trouble this year, and Coker is probably on his way out. Miami did a pre-game cheer on the logo in the middle of the field, Louisville wasn't too happy about that. Good job Miami.
6. USC vs. Nebraska. Nebraska actually looks much improved, but they are no match for the football factory that is USC. If I hear one more thing about great John David Booty is, a guy who has played in 2 games against 2 rather mediocre defenses, I may throw up.
7. Clemson vs. Florida St. Well I guess we can say that neither Miami or FSU are very good this year. Not taking anything away from Clemson, but FSU used to be a powerhouse in the ACC. Now they lost at home to a Tigers team riddled with injuries.
Those are the games I saw the most of. There were many others that I didn't see like Florida vs. Tennessee, but with so many games on, there are only so many I can take in.
